  • Pierre Mortier acquired the copper printing-plates for Blaeu's great town books of Italy, which were originally published from the 1660s onwards, and issued his own four volume edition (with some retouching and additions) in 1704-05.

Mortier retained the arms of Pope Alexander VII (1599-1667), top left, and his cardinal-nephew Cardinal Flavio Chigi (1631-1693) top right. Both were current when originally engraved, but their retention seems appropriate. Pope Alexander VII was a major architectural patron and made numerous contributions to the fabric of Rome, including the Scala Regia and various additions to St Peter's and the Vatican.
