As the map was published by the G-2 or intelligence section of the unit, the artist may have been on the staff. The final date is December 23-28 1944, when 2nd Armored was involved in the destruction of the 2nd Panzer Division in the Celles pocket. The first date given on the revised map is 16 January 1945, when elements of 2nd Armored completed the encirclement of German forces in the Ardennes at Houffalize, and it seems reasonable to assume that our map was drawn in the first weeks of January.

Condition & Materials

First version of a campaign map charting the wartime progress of the US 2nd Armored Division, sheet size 58.5 x 75 cm, printed in colours, blank verso.

Topographia Repraesentio Barbarici Portus et Urbis Munitae Oran …

Oran, an important trading port and now Algeria’s second city, was governed by the Spanish between 1509 and 1708; our map was engraved on the occasion of its recapture from the Ottomans. There are scenes of daily life in the foreground: laden donkeys, carts, a palanquin suspended between camels, and exotically robed and turbanned figures. The horizon is perhaps closer to Braun & Hogenberg’s, though more mountainous, but there are differences between Dapper and his predecessors. The pyramids are shown rising from a plain, rather than perched on flat-topped hills, and they are if anything more numerous. There has also been an attempt to depict urban sprawl: buildings now reach the city wall, covering a hilly area to the south, and indeed there has been development beyond, and on the periphery to the north of the city. Using the most reliable eye-witness accounts and his own extensive library of travel books he composed authoratitive and entertaining finely-illustrated works on Asia, Africa and America. His Naukeurige Beschrijvinghe Der Afrikaensche was first published in Dutch in 1668, in German in 1670 and in French in 1686, and it was used by John Ogilby (1600-1676) as the basis for his Africa, the best account of the continent available in English at the time, using many of the same maps and views.

Condition & Materials

Copper engraving, 24.5 x 32 cm, black and white, blank verso.

This map of ancient Egypt is from Mallet’s Description de l’Univers, first published in Paris in 1683 and reprinted with German text in Frankfurt the following year.

Mallet was a military engineer, cartographer and mathematician in the service of the French King, Louis XIV.

Condition & Materials

Copper engraving, 15.5 x 10.5 cm, black and white, trivial stain top left, French text on verso.

This map of Alexandria is from Mallet’s Description de l’Univers, first published in Paris in 1683 and reprinted with German text in Frankfurt the following year.

Mallet was a military engineer, cartographer and mathematician in the service of the French King, Louis XIV.

Condition & Materials

Copper engraving, 15 x 10.5 cm, black and white, French text on verso.

Karte von der Küste von Angola von dem Flusse Bengo bis an den Fluss Quanza

This map show the coastline of northern Angola between the rivers Bengo and Cuanza, with Luanda and the neighbouring Portuguese fort, from the German edition of Prévost's Voyages.

Jacques Nicolas Bellin the elder (1703-1772) was first chief hydrographic engineer of the Dépôt des cartes, plans et journaux du Ministère de la Marine, charged by the French king with mapping the coasts of France first and then the rest of the world.
