This map of Western Africa shows caravan routes leading into the Sahara; the course of the Niger – still partially uncertain, but reaching a point just south of Timbuktu, which is broadly correct – ; and the legendary Mountains of Kong, mistakenly added to the map by James Rennell in 1798 to illustrate the travels of Mungo Park.
Engraved by John Rapkin for the ‘Illustrated Atlas’, the map also features vignettes of Sierra Leone and Cape Coast Castle engraved by Edward Radclyffe after Henry Winkles.
