As the map was published by the G-2 or intelligence section of the unit, the artist may have been on the staff. The map was probably published in the field: this edition was passed by censor, and the revised edition advises that it has been passed by the Allied Expeditionary Force censor, suggesting that they were printed near to where the unit was located.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs noted on the map, the unit entered Germany in September 1944, although the last action mentioned on the map was fought in eastern Belgium, as Allied forces rushed to contain the German Ardennes offensive. The final date is December 23-28 1944, when 2nd Armored was involved in the destruction of the 2nd Panzer Division in the Celles pocket. Kitaj (1932-2007) was an American artist of Jewish heritage, who spent much of his working life in London. \"The In Our Time portfolio (1969) is a series of fifty photo-screenprints that became Kitaj's major artistic focus during the year following the death of his Viennese-born first wife. Subtitled 'Covers for a small library after the life for the most part,' it documents favorite books that had inspired him intellectually. Kitaj described this project as an example of outright 'Duchampism,' in that these are indeed images appropriated from actual bookcovers. Although these are 'ready-mades,' Kitaj's surviving correspondence reveals that there was nonetheless a careful image-editing process, even alteration, of individual prints during the portfolio's production. The prevailing idea of these covers is that they reflect 'well-used' books; torn and stained bookjackets, dog-eared pages, and loose strings from worn-out bindings are all replicated in the screenprints. Collectively, the covers are fragments of Kitaj's mental and spiritual inner life, each representing some idea or philosophy that had resonated with the artist. Certainly some covers are visual tributes in themselves to the graphic innovations of 20th-century book design, whereas others are homages to favorite modern texts, e.g., W. B. Yeats, James Agee, and Henry Miller. Still others reflect larger social and political interests of the mid-20th-century...Collage-like, appropriated, and often ironic, they also subtly reference the 'Pop Art' use of advertising labels (e.g. Warhol's Soup Cans). In France, colourful Scottish financier John Law won the confidence of the Duke of Orleans (then Regent of France), and was permitted to set up the Mississippi Company, which controlled all trade with France’s vast and largely unexplored American possessions - believed to be rich in gold and silver.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLaw established the Royal Bank and issued paper money based on the supposed value of shares in the company. Eventually he was minting French coinage, collecting taxes and largely controlling the French economy. The value of the shares soared, the French economy boomed, more paper notes were issued and after a period of wild speculation confidence collapsed, ruining investors throughout Europe.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe imaginary ‘mad-head’ island depicted by the engraver in a sea of shares and inhabited by shareholders (discovered by Mr Law-rens) has an ass’s ears and wears a fool’s cap. The cartouche shows angry investors storming the offices of John Law’s company, and an equally ludicrous land-ship sailing towards a lunatic asylum.
