This map is a postwar quad royal version of Beck’s innovative and influential diagram, published for display in stations across the Underground network.
Beck’s final, heavily revised design was introduced in 1953-54 and continued in use until 1960 when it was replaced with an entirely new design by Harold Hutchison. The main features here are the ‘rectification’ of the Thames, a simplified rectangular Circle Line, a new way of showing the branching of certain lines which was intended to give the branches equal importance, and an 11 x 16 grid.
Condition & Materials
Quad royal platform map, 102 x 126.5 cm (approx 40 x 50 inches), lined on paper and linen, a fine example. Published in London.
