Insularum Britannicarum Accurata Delineatio ex Geographicis Conatibus Abrahami Ortelii.
Copper engraving, 39.5 x 51 cm, recent hand-colour, slight toning, French text on verso. Map of Ancient Britain derived from Ortelius’ historical map of Roman Britain, published in his Parergon, this is the second state of Janssonius’ map with rhumb lines and compass roses, issued from 1646 onwards. Contemporary galleons cruise the seas, but the place-names are largely dervied from Roman sources, prominence is given to the Antonine Wall and Hadrian’s Wall, and the cartouche is flanked by ancient Britons.
