This particular map charts the French campaigns of 1796-1800, marking the routes of the French armies on the map and detailing the campaigns in the text on the right hand side. The text also covers aspects of the history and political structure of Italy, as it was in 1805, the year in which Napoleon became King of Italy.
Las Cases fled the French revolution and published the first edition of his ‘Historical, genealogical, chronological and geographical atlas’ in London, under the pseudonym A Lasage. He returned to France after the Peace of Amiens in 1802 and swore allegiance to Napoleon. After Napoleon’s second abdication he was instrumental in arranging the Emperor’s surrender to Captain Maitland of HMS Bellerophon, and he accompanied him to St Helena.
