Historiae Romanae Scriptores Latini Veteres, qui extant omnes: Regum, Consulum, Caesarum res gestas ab Urbe condita continentes: nunc primum in unum redacti Corpus, duobus Tomis distinctum […] Genevae [Geneva], apud Petrum Chouet, 1653

A collected edition of Roman historians including Livy, Tacitus and Ammianus Marcellinus, edited by Pierre de la Rovière (fl. 1599-1623).

    Condition & Materials

2 vols. folio. pp. [xx], 915, [i]; [vi], 707, [ccxxix]. OCLC refers to an additional architectural engraved title-page, lacking here. Title-page of volume 1 printed in red and black. Woodcut non-Aldine dolphin-and-anchor printer's device on title-pages of both volumes, with Pierre Chouet's motto 'Festina Tarde' (Chouet died in 1648 and this work was published by his heirs); text printed in two columns, with woodcut head-pieces and  ornamental initials. Waterstaining in upper margin of first volume. Contemporary blind-ruled calf, solidly rebacked (in 1973, according to a hand-written label), some wear. From the library of Repton School, with an 18th century book label of Repton School on the pastedown, 'ad usum Scholae Reptonensis' lettered direct on the upper covers and later Repton ink stamps to the title-pages. Numerous schoolboy inscriptions, particularly to lower endpapers of the first volume, mostly 18th century, often names followed by ‘a young student’ or ‘scholar’; legible names include John Cantrell (a Derbyshire family which seems to have sent several generations to Repton), William Carver and Edward Abbot.
