    According to ODNB Barrow (fl 1735-1774) was a naval schoolmaster, instructing 'young gentlemen' in mathematics and navigation. He was the author of ‘Navigatio Britannica’ (1750) – a practical manual of navigation and chart making which was frequently reprinted – and he compiled a number of scientific and geographical dictionaries, histories, and a collection of voyages.     First edition. 4 vols, 12mo. pp. xlviii, 271, [i]; xii, 336; xi, [i], 339; xi, [i], 370 + 4 black and white folding maps of the continents: Europe engraved by Joseph Ellis; Asia by John Gibson; Africa and America by Thomas Kitchin. Also with 10 black and white medallion portraits engraved by Thomas Chambars, William Proud, John Ryland, Charles Grignion and J Miller. Occasional spotting and one or two light stains, neatly closed tears (without loss) to a couple of the maps. Worn contemporary calf, recently rebacked to style.

    Early ownership signature of Matthew Buchanan at the head of each title-page. A revised edition was published in 1761, bringing coverage of the Seven Years' War up-to-date.
