This chart shows the waters of the British Channel and the Bay of Biscay. The coasts of Ireland, Wales, England, France and Spain are also featured. All of the approaches to east are lined and lettered, with the ‘Explanation’ under the map title detailing what type of ground was found. You can also see the track of the British Fleet commanded by Lord Howe during the battle of the Glorious First of June.
This map is known in an earlier state by William Faden dated 1778, and here it is noted as a 3rd Edition. The mapmaker is given in the title as L'Abbe Diquemare, updated by de la Rochette.
Condition & Materials
Copper engraving, two sheets joined (as issued), 51.5 x 88.5 cm, original hand-colour in outline, with three marginal tears to the right side, one in the lower right corner just affecting the neatline.
