This world map tracks for all three of Cook’s voyages, and was published in ‘Smith’s new general atlas’, which was issued in various editions from 1808 onwards.
The engraver, Benjamin Smith, came to an unfortunate end: in 1817 he and fellow engraver Joseph Bye were convicted and hanged for forging Margate Bank notes.
Charles Smith (c.1768-1854) appears to have been no relation. His business flourished through three generations of the family, until taken over by George Philip in 1916.
