Regiones sub Polo Arctico

Copper engraving, 41 x 53 cm, original hand-colour, slight browning, French text on verso.
This is the second state of this map of the Arctic, a near identical version of Janssonius’ map of 1637 first published under Willem Blaeu’s imprint in the last year of his life, issued here with a new dedication to Guilielmo Backer. It draws on numerous early sources for Arctic exploration, including the discovries of James, Barentsz, Baffin, Frobisher, Hall and Davis. The Blaeu firm was official cartographer to the Dutch East India Company (VOC), and Blaeu globes were carried on all VOC vessels; its map-making was of the highest quality at a time when the Low Countries were at the forefront of the international market.
