Copper engraving, 27 x 31.4 cm, black and white, a couple of short additional creases to the right of the centrefold, light toning, blank verso. This is a map of the British Isles on an east-west alignment, published by Erasmus Kempfer in Lundorp’s ‘Laurea Austraica’, a topical work covering events of the ongoing Thirty Years’ War.

Custos was born into a family of engravers, son of Dominicus Custos who relocated from Antwerp to Augsburg; his sons continued the business. Custos largely uses Ortelius’ British Isles map as a model, but revisions to the coastline of Ireland and some additional placenames suggest that he had also consulted other sources.
