London: Day & Son for FG Moon, 1842-45. Tinted lithograph by Louis Haghe after Roberts, 35.5 x 51 cm, minor spotting. From the first edition of ‘The Holy Land’ which, with its companion volumes on ‘Egypt and Nubia’, form “one of the most important and elaborate ventures in nineteenth-century publishing, and … the apotheosis of the tinted lithograph” (Abbey). Roberts toured Egypt, Sinai, Palestine and Syria in 1838 and 1839. The subject is further identified as ‘Wady Barah’ and dated February 17 1839, when Roberts and his party were travelling between Suez and St Catherine’s Monastery. Abbey, Travel, 385.
