From the first edition of ‘Egypt and Nubia’, which (with its companion volumes on ‘The Holy Land’) in Abbey’s words forms “one of the most important and elaborate ventures in nineteenth-century publishing, and … the apotheosis of the tinted lithograph”. Roberts’ own felucca, flying the Red Ensign, is shown in the foreground, approaching the island fortress of Qasr Ibrim in Lower Nubia. Abbey, Travel, 272.
