The Empire of India Exhibition was the first of impresario Imre Kiralfy’s annual spectacles at Earl’s Court, which was rebuilt in Mughal Indian style for the occasion. It included a newly built Great Wheel, a ‘jungle’ described as ‘a veritable triumph of the taxidermist’s art’, an Indian theatre where magicians, acrobats, snake charmers and nautch dancers performed, an ‘Indian city’ with elaborately carved wooden buildings populated by Indian craftsmen, and a larger theatre where a ‘grand historical spectacle’ covering the history of India from 1024 onward was presented.
