Full Description

Steel engraving, 21.5 x 26 cm, original hand colour, very light waterstain top left, blank verso with pencilled head and shoulders sketch of a woman; map of New Zealand published in ‘A New General Atlas of Modern Geography’.

The North and South Islands are named ‘Eaheinomauwe or New Ulster’ and ‘Tavai Poenammoo or New Munster’, while Stewart Island (Rakiura) is also named ‘New Leinster’. The nomenclature reflects Cook’s original attempts to record the Maori names and the geographical names which had recently been given when New Zealand was separated from the colony of New South Wales in 1840 and established as a colony in its own right.
