Catalogue Description

Copper engraving, 32.5 x 21.5 cm, six line Latin poem on verso. The famous portrait of Ortelius which appeared in editions of the Theatrum after 1579, engraved by Philips Galle after a painting on wood by Adriaen Thomaszoon Key. The playful couplet beneath, by Andre de Pape, praises both mapmaker and engraver: ‘Ortelius gave mankind the world to look upon; Galle gave the world Ortelius to look upon’.
