Joyce, James: Chamber Music. London: Elkin Mathews 1907
First edition. 16mo. A-E4.
Light stain to gutter of B1, outline of a paperclip to upper margin of half title. Green publisher’s cloth, a trifle rubbed at extremities, thin wove endpapers, old ownership signature of James Barlow. Joyce’s first published volume of poetry, printed in an edition of 509 copies. Quaritch (‘Bulletin 19’, 1984) argue that only “fifty or a hundred” copies of the first variant were bound and issued in 1907. At a significantly later date the remaining sheets were reissued with wove endpapers, one batch thicker than the other. The thin wove paper, as here, is sometimes considered the third issue.
