Copper engraving, 13 x 18.2 cm, black and white, blank verso.

The cartography of this map of Persia is derived from Mercator’s map as published by Hondius in the ‘Atlas Minor’ (BNF specifies the edition engraved by Van den Keere and Goos in 1628, cf Koeman Me 194).

Our map was first published by Jean Boissevin 1643 in ‘Tresor des Cartes Geographiques Des Principaux Estats De L Univers’ (an atlas of 38 maps with no accompanying text, reprinted by Louis Boissevin in 1653). Our example, published by Gérard Jollain, is dated 1667 and the atlas was reprinted by his sons in 1687; Jollain founded a dynasty of engravers.
