Copper engraving, 14 x 10.5 cm, black and white, French text on verso; map of the continent of Africa from Mallet’s Description de l’Univers, first published in Paris in 1683 and reprinted with German text in Frankfurt the following year.

Mallet was a military engineer, cartographer and mathematician in the service of the French King, Louis XIV. Betz notes the relative lack of interior detail, owing to the small format of the map, but it generally follows a much earlier Blaeu interpretation of Africa.
