Aquatint view

In stock

Aquatint, 38.5 x 48.5 cm, drawn by Orme after Francis Swain Ward, original hand colour, on Whatman wove paper dated 1804, slight marginal creasing, blank verso. Originially published in the series ‘Twenty-Four Views in Hindostan’, a part-work issued 1802-1805 to illustrate Francis Blagdon’s ‘Brief History of Ancient and Modern India’; the plates appeared in a slightly different order when the book was made available as a complete volume. BM notes that ‘this composition is based on a picture by Francis Swain Ward… it depicts the river Yamuna, as it flows past the fort at Mathura, in Uttar Pradesh. The fort, known as the Khans Qila, was built by Raja Man Singh of Amber in the early 17th Century.’
