Copper engraving, 10.8 x 14.8 cms, engraved by Girolamo Porro, a map of the world set in descriptive Italian text with woodcut headpiece and historiated initial, black and white. First published in 1572, our map is from the second edition of L’Isole piu famose del Mondo, one of the most beautifully engraved of the Italian ‘Isolaria’ or Island books. Described by Shirley as “a finely executed reduction of Camocio’s large world map of 1567”, which is itself derived from Gastaldi’s prototype of 1546. Shirley 127.
