Copper engraving, 49 x 68 cm, original hand colour in outline, blank verso. The second state of Robert de Vaugondy’s map of the Roman Empire, with the island of Thule added, first published in 1752.
The original date and privilege have been burnished from the plate, and Groux’s name added. There also seems to be an intermediate state bearing Groux’s name, retaining the date. Both the identity of Groux, and why his name was added to cartouches which were otherwise unaltered, remains mysterious (Pedley p. 67).
