Steel engraving, approx 40 x 34 cm, engraved by John & Charles Walker, original hand colour in outline, blank verso.
This map of Japan has insets of Nagasaki Harbour and the eastern tip of Yeso (Hokkaido), which would otherwise be excluded from the map. The interior of Hokkaido remains almost unknown to Europeans; some mountainous terrain, presumably visible from the sea, is marked, and a note in the southern part of the island reads ‘populous coast’.
Walter suggests that the cartography was influenced by Jones’ map of 1813, and Thomson’s of 1815. Walter, Japan, 129.
