  • This is an unusually nice example of the second, October issue of this geographic style map.

It is often browned: in the months after the Armistice paper quality had not returned to prewar standards. Surface features such as parks and roads are shown, but in black and white rather than the full colour of the final prewar issues. Extensions which are under construction are not shown, but there are some station name-changes: Strand is now Aldwych, Charing Cross has become Strand and Great Central has been renamed Marylebone. One aspect of the design is outstanding: it was the first map to carry the new bar and roundel emblem designed by Edward Johnston, and to feature the Johnston typeface. The cover of the June issue was printed entirely in black and white, but for our edition the roundel appears in its customary red.
