Full Description

Copper engraving, 8.7 x 12.5 cm, modern hand colour, printed on relatively thin paper, blank verso. Published in a French text edition of the Caert-Thresoor, or ‘map treasury’ described by King as ‘a superior rival to the pocket Ortelius atlas’ originally published in 1598 under the joint imprint of Barent Langenes and Cornelis Claesz with maps engraved by ‘two of the finest Flemish engravers: brothers-in-law Jodocus Hondius and Pieter van den Keere’. Koeman describes this series of pocket atlas as ‘easily the best in this bibliography’, in terms of text and engraving.
