Weigel’s Map of Roman Britain

Insulae Britanniae Antiquae

Copper engraving, 33.5 x 40.5 cm, original hand-colour, blank verso; map of the British Isles in the Roman era, published in Johann David Köhler’s historical atlas “Descriptio Orbis Antiqui…”

Weigel marks Hadrian’s Wall and both the Antonine and Severan Walls as separate features, with the latter spanning Scotland between the Firth of Clyde and Firth of Forth. The location of the Wall of Severus is pure conjecture, and it is sometimes identified with the Antonine Wall and even Offa’s Dyke. The cartouche shows a selection of Roman and ancient British coinage.
