Stobaeus, Joannes: [Greek title] Sententiae ex thesaurus Graecorum delectae [Colophon: Tiguri (Zurich), apud Christophorum Frosch(ouer)] 1559
Folio. pp. [xxiv], 632, [xxxii] including final blank. Parallel Greek and Latin text. Edited by Conrad Gessner, with additional prefatory material for this, his third edition of Stobaeus’ anthology of extracts from Greek authors. Neat annotations to title page and brief marginalia throughout, probably in a seventeenth-century hand. Light stain to title-page but generally clean. Blindstamped pigskin, dated 1570, over pasteboard. A triple fillet frame on the covers creates a central panel flanked by a portrait roll (religious subjects, for example ‘Ecce Agnus Dei’ and ‘Lex Mosen’) with an outer roll of stylised foliage. Lacks ribbon ties as usual. Some wear to corners, but generally a very good example. Adams S1878.
