This is Henri Estienne’s second edition of Herodotus’ Histories. He published Lorenzo Valla’s Latin translation in 1566 and the original Greek text in 1570, but here they appear together, in parallel columns, both extensively revised and corrected.
Condition & Materials
Folio. pp. [xlviii], 731, [xxv] + 5 woodcut folding plates (Babylon, the tower of Babel, the citadel and the gardens of Semiramis – i.e. the legendary hanging gardens of Babylon – and the bridge of Babylon). Title printed in red and black, a trifle dusty; occasional spots and stains, and old marginal annotations in ink. Later mottled English calf, circa 1800, somewhat worn, rebacked preserving original spine. Ownership signature of William Percy on title.
