This silk scarf printed with a map of the London underground is an officially licensed example of Tube merchandise, using Harry Beck’s 1949 design – which Beck apparently believed to be ‘perhaps the best of all his versions of the Diagram... he had managed at last to eradicate all those features with which he had been unwillingly saddled by others’.
This was the last major revision of the design to feature the proposed Northern Heights extension and other unbuilt elements of the 1930s New Works Programme, including a brief revival of the proposed Bakerloo Line extension to Camberwell. The border would have been blue on the regular posters, rather than Metropolitan Line magenta.
