Ortelius Map of Muscovy

Engraved by Frans Hogenberg and published in Ortelius' ‘Theatrum Orbis Terrarum’ (generally considered to be the first modern atlas), this map of Muscovy was based on maps by English merchant and diplomat Anthony Jenkinson, who travelled to the region four times between 1558 and 1571, bringing detailed and up-to-date geographical information back to western Europe for the first time.

Copper engraving, 35 x 45.7 cm, original hand colour, slight oxidisation of green pigments, light stain in upper margin with a couple of splashes extending into the printed area, Latin text on verso. Published in Antwerp.
