  • Port of London Authority
  • Our map captures a particular moment in the history of the docks. After extensive postwar reconstruction and development, the Port of London saw its ‘best year in 1964 when trade exceeded 61m tonnes and the number of enclosed docks reached its peak’ (PLA).

Surrey Docks were deepened to accept larger ships in the early 1960s, but were still unable to cope with the demands of containerisation. They were closed in 1969, warehousing was demolished and most of the docks filled in. All had been disposed of by 1977.

    Condition & Materials

Folding map, 52 x 42.3 cm, printed in colours, dissected into 4 panels and laid on linen, short split along one fold, folding into cloth covers stamped in gilt with the map’s title and the job description of the user (‘assistant engineer’). Scattered contemporary annotations in pencil, mostly detailing the types of wood dealt with in different docks. Published in London.
