PLA Plan of Tilbury Docks
Date of publication:
66.5 x 71 cm
Our map captures a particular moment in the history of the docks. After extensive postwar reconstruction and development, the Port of London saw its ‘best year in 1964 when trade exceeded 61m tonnes and the number of enclosed docks reached its peak’ (PLA). Note the dock extension under construction. The PLA funded a new container port, completed in 1967 (although not fully opened until 1970 due to labour issues). Of all the London docks, Tilbury was best placed to meet the challenges of containerisation.
