The history and antiquities of Windsor Castle, and the Royal College, and Chapel of St. George: with the Institution, Laws, and Ceremonies of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.. with… particulars not mentioned by any author. The whole intirely new wrote, and illustrated with Cuts. Eton: printed by Joseph Pote 1749.

Pote married the widow of an Eton bookseller and moved permanently to the town circa 1730. ODNB notes: ‘Pote published several schoolbooks and classical texts throughout his career but there were also scholarly works aimed at a wider public than the boys at Eton College. Remarkably soon after his arrival in Eton he published Catalogus almunorum … de Etona (1730) and later, a revised edition of William Cave's Historia literaria (1735), and there were a few popular works—The Foreigner's Guide to London (1728) and the History and Antiquities of Windsor Castle (1749)’.

If you want something done right

In the preface Pote explains that his proposal to print material collected much earlier by Elias Ashmole and John Mapletoft was so well received that he planned an entirely new book, but as no new author would undertake the work ‘necessity not choice, obliged the Bookseller to act himself, in the double capacity of Author and Printer’.
