    Mexico achieved independence in 1821, and became a republic in 1823. Between 1823 and 1825 Stephen Austin successfully renegotiated with the new government for the right to settle a group of Americans in Texas.

    Condition & Materials 

    Copper engraving, 2 sheets joined, approx 38 x 60 cm, engraved by Gilbert Pickett after J. Smith, original hand colour, one or two trivial spots and stains, blank verso. Published in ‘Smith’s new general atlas’, which was issued in various editions from 1808 onwards. The date of engraving in the lower margin is given as 1823.
