  • Charles Smith
  • This is the second, 1808, edition of Charles Smith's map of Middlesex. It first appeared in his 'New English Atlas, Being A Complete Set of County Maps'.

Smith was a stationer and mapseller working in the Strand, London, from about 1800. He upheld the standard set by John Cary for clear, detailed and elegant county maps. Commercially successful, the maps were re-issued in atlas form and as folding maps into the 1860's.

Smith’s (c.1768-1854) business flourished through three generations of the family, until taken over by George Philip in 1916.
