  • Printed in very small numbers, this distance map by Stingemore is a departure from his more familiar passenger maps. It was created for internal use by the Underground Group.

    Fred Stingemore designed maps, posters and other publicity material for the Underground Group and London Transport between 1914 and 1942, and worked for Frank Pick in the Publicity Manager's Office from 1919. Read more

    A faint ink stamp on the verso reveals that it was printed by A West and Partners, York Street, Westminster, a firm that seems to have specialised in drawing office equipment, photographic printing and copying engineering drawings and tracings. 

    Condition & Materials

    Lithographed folding map, printed area measurement 51.5 x 91.5 cm, black and white, dissected into 24 panels and laid on linen, a couple of annotations in pen and pencil.


    An example of this map in the London Transport Museum collection (1998/100061) is described as an engineering drawing, and although unattributed carries the same date as our example, 28th January 1921. An amended version is dated March 1927 (1998/109209). Read less
