The District Railway was one of the earliest underground lines: the stretch of track from South Kensington to Westminster was opened in 1868. The District company’s lines are shown in red, all other railways are shown in blue, superimposed on a detailed street plan of London extending to Ealing in the west, with Putney Bridge and Wimbledon section inset top left. The covers are illustrated with views of local landmarks: Tower Bridge, St Paul’s, and Westminster Abbey. Hyde: Printed Maps of Victorian London, 176 B (6).
