Aquatint view
Aquatint, 38 x 50 cm, drawn by Orme after Francis Swain Ward and engraved by Joseph Constantine Stadler, originial hand colour, on Whatman wove paper dated 1804, marginal creasing, blank verso. Originally published in the series ‘Twenty-Four Views in Hindostan’, a part-work issued 1802-1805 to illustrate Francis Blagdon’s ‘Brief History of Ancient and Modern India’; the plates appeared in a slightly different order when the book was made available as a complete volume. Both Abbey and Tooley credit Daniell as the artist of this view, but the imprint of our example credits Colonel Ward. Abbey Travel 424 and 425; Tooley, English books with coloured plates, 93.
