Keep (U)SAFE this winter with our rayon scarf
This scarf features a partial pictorial world map (the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Africa), centred on the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by the flags of NATO allies and the United Nations. USAFE (United States Air Force Europe) is also emblazoned across the Atlantic.
The flagship aircraft at the top of the map is the B47 Stratojet, the primary bomber aircraft operated by Strategic Air Command in the 1950s (its role was the delivery of nuclear weapons); it was supplanted by the B52 in 1964, although the type remained in service for several years. The transport aircraft is a C97 Stratofreighter and the other aircraft (in striking contrast to the views of Rome and Venice beneath) is an experimental hypersonic rocket powered aircraft, the X-15, which first flew in 1959.
The scarf was almost certainly printed in Germany: German nomenclature includes ‘Jamaika’, ‘Bahama Inseln’ and ‘Kairo’. There is a signature (Steinbaile?) next to a view of Weisbaden, which was a major US air base. It may well have been sold as a souvenir in a PX store. Alongside views of major towns and cities are some surprises, such as Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a Bavarian ski resort; after the war, it was used by the US military as a recreation centre for servicemen and their families.
