Probably printed to coincide with the Second Anglo-Afghan War of 1878 to 1880, this map takes in a wider region stretching west to the Caspian Sea and including the remaining independent Khanates and the ever expanding frontier of the Russian Empire. Tensions between Britain and Russia lay behind both the war and the detailed British mapping of the region.
