This is an LNER colliery map covering the midlands and north of England and Wales ('Collieries in Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Lancashire, Cheshire & North Wales & their railway connections'.), dated on the cover.
Individual collieries to which the LNER had access are named in red. The railway companies were among the collieries’ major customers. For example, Harworth Colliery in northern Nottinghamshire was linked to the LNER mainline by a special two and a half mile branch line in 1924, just a year before this map was published. It produced ‘hard’ coal which was good for steaming, and LNER locomotives such as the ‘Mallard’ and ‘Flying Scotsman’ were reputedly burning Harworth coal when making their various record breaking attempts in the 1930s
