  • This map of Rome is an early modern conception of the city in its ancient form, derived from Ambrogio Brambilla’s 1582 map and published in Chatelain’s encyclopaedic ‘Atlas Historique’.

Chatelain's imaginative reconstruction ignores the private or domestic aspect of Rome to focus entirely on the principal public buildings and monuments. 152 of these are numbered and identified in the legend in the bottom right section of the map.
