The author of ‘Boxiana’ and of the hugely successful ‘Life in London’, which was illustrated by Cruikshank, Pierce Egan was also the most popular sportswriter of his day and a masterly recorder of Regency sporting slang. This is one for the Janeites and Heyer-heads.
