Stories about Paul Bunyan, the lumberjack of gigantic proportions, originated in late 19th century North American lumber camps. Read more
The map was drawn and published by cartoonist Ray DeWitt Handy (1879-1959), playfully illustrating tall tales in the life of ‘America's Only Folk-Lore Character’. Hardy worked for the Duluth News Tribune and also wrote and illustrated the children’s book ‘Paul Bunyan and His Big Blue Ox’.
In the context of our map it’s worth noting that the earliest recorded story in print is an uncredited 1904 editorial in the Duluth News Tribune, Handy’s paper.
