This plan of the Manchester Shipping Canal was published as a supplement to ‘The Illustrated London News’, February 3rd 1883.
Construction began in 1887, and the canal opened in 1894. It was an engineering marvel, the largest river navigation canal in the world, transforming Manchester from a landlocked city into a major sea port.
