London: Day & Son for FG Moon, 1842-45. Tinted lithograph by Louis Haghe after Roberts, 35.5 x 51 cm, minor spotting. From the first edition of ‘The Holy Land’ and ‘Egypt and Nubia’, which in Abbey’s words form “one of the most important and elaborate ventures in nineteenth-century publishing, and ... the apotheosis of the tinted lithograph”. Roberts toured Egypt, Sinai, Palestine and Syria in 1838 and 1839, reaching Sidon or Saļda, in modern Lebanon, in April 1839. His view of the port includes the early 13th century sea castle. Abbey, Travel, 385.
