George Anson’s circumnavigation of the world, 1740-44, was undertaken to harrass the Spanish during the War of Jenkins’ Ear. Most of his squadron was wrecked, or limped back to England independently, and barely a quarter of his his crews survived the voyage. Read more
However, the capture of the Manila galleon ‘ Nuestra Señora de Covadonga’ with 1,313,843 pieces of eight on board was a cause for national celebration, and made Anson a rich man for life. This memoir was compiled from Anson’s notes and the journals of his ship’s chaplain, Richard Walter, by pioneering scientist, mathematician and military engineer Benjamin Robins.

10th edition. 8vo. pp. [xii], 536 + 4 folding engraved charts, three signed by Richard William Seale, a clean example; contemporary gilt-ruled sprinkled calf, a little rubbed, some wear to headcap.
Ownership isncription of Sarah Clarke dated 1763; amorial bookplate of Thomas Sneyd Kynnersley pasted over another bookplate on the verso of the title. Read less
