Velleius Paterculus covers Roman history from the earliest times to his own, c. AD 30. He was a friend of Sejanus, and may well have shared his fate when Sejanus fell suddenly and fatally from Tiberius’s favour. Dibdin describes both of the editions of Pieter Burman the elder as excellent: the first was published in 1719; ours is the second, ‘a reimpression of the first with considerable improvements’.
